cleaning the off roader
Discussion
hi,
what do people us to clean their 4x4's ?
I normally use the Halfords jet wash and a bucket of hot water with car shampoo followed by the dirt devil spray on while its wet wax stuff
any other options ?
I don't want to go down the 98 bucket wash and using the hair from a 50 year old virgin wash mit etc.
someone said a foam lance ?
any ideas etc please
thanks
Stuart

I just take the RR to the local coso's they do a great job for 8 pounds and never moan no matter how sh!tted up it is and it's usually bad after a shoot because the lazy b@rstards on the forestry commision will not do anything with the tracks. If you do it at home you usually end up with a ton of muck to get rid of from the car.
I use snow foam (karcher snow foam gun circa £20 from Amazon etc) a bottle of Demon Shine Snow Foam and a microfibre wash mit. Good going over with the jet wash, foam the car up, giggle because it looks like a t-rex jizzed on your car, wasah down with wash mitt, good rinse with jet wash and dry off with mircofibre towel. Uncluding the jet wash the setup cost £90. I dont bother with polish or demon shine stuff for the P+P wagons..

Where was the pay and play site? Did you have any problems with a road biased car?
Have been looking into getting one of these, they are not as you might think that road biased as it goes...It looks like a pay and play that isn't too extreme. I have a Kia Sportage and want to try some mild offroad so was interested where this was. I have watched some YouTube videos where mad Russians take their Kia's offroad and they seem to be OK, just didn't want to turn up somewhere and get stuck in the car park.

Parkwood 4x4 centre (Bradford) and the marshals were fantastic. They have some serious 4x4 tracks and different coloured routes for more road based vehicles like mine. The picture you see is the outer perimeter road and then routes off it are colour coded from easy to hard core. The Vw did really well on road based tyres and for an off road novice amazed me in its ability.
My car has Air suspension and needed to be on full height to clear some of the ruts. Being a V10 didn't hurt either
The company below was a bit intimidating but the marshals couldn't have been nicer and showed me round the hole park.
Incidentally I have some serious cleaning to do but it generally looks like this

I've got an old Grand Cherokee so worrying about scratches is a thing of the past. Two times I've been off-roading one went to a manned wash and the guy did not look pleased. Asked where on earth I'd been and told me a £5 wash wasn't ever going to get it clean (it did) and the other time to a car wash that offered an under side clean (it didn't really clean it).
Even when I get a pressure washer sorted out not sure I'd wash it in my drive fresh out the off-road centre, there can be a lot of mud to clean off!

Good to see another Touareg venturing off the tarmac. The early ones are at an age/value now where it's not the end of the world if they take a bit of a battering. Every panel on mine has seen better days!
I'm quite careful to give the underside a proper rinse when I've been through sticky clay. I drive up on to ramps and use a pressure washer.
I've got full MT tyres on mine (plus high-lift suspension), they do make a hell of a difference:

Holy Touareg tyres , The limiting factor for me was my road biased tyres but it still ploughed up some impressive hills and gave me a chance to experience the hill decent factor using low range and massive engine breaking ability .
Its a shame more people don't use them off road and I had quiet a few thumbs ups from the guys in major off road vehicles .
Mine is also old and although I am not prepared to wreck the thing the value has long gone in these vehicles so hey ho lets have some fun .

Just Power wash with foam lance the body work and mud off underneath and all of the known mud trap points.
Leave the rest for the rain to sort out.
Ideally try and wash it either at the petrol station or get as much mud off before I get home, few times through know deep puddles sort a lot out, annoying to have a load of mud on the drive.

I've got an old Defender and go to Harwell quite a lot (near Peterborough). I normally park on the outside edge of the lake and clean a lot of mud off with a stick before leaving site. There are a lot of areas at Harwell that would be suitable for a more road-biased cars. There's normally a few Disco 3s pottering about. The thing to do is approach anything you're not sure about with caution so you are not too far in when you do get stuck 😁. Consider some sort of recovery hitch even if only at the rear and buy a decent tow rope.
My Touareg last year doing a bit of off reading at Todds Leap N.I. Afterwards I just gave it a good power wash.
Heraward, do you have steel standard steel spring suspension on your Touareg, and if so what lift is fitted? I've three sets of wheels for mine. Two sets of 18" rims and a set of 17" rims that I want to get serious off road tyres for.

You must have more forgiving washers than us, most around here tell you to 'f**k off' even if you just ask for a quick blow over whilst it's on the trailer - they don't want to have to deal with the mud on the premises! And god help you if you want to give it a quick blast over with the pressure washer on a forecourt, even the ones with dedicated washing bays....
