Are there any satnav systems out there that pick up byways?

Some do, some don't, and even those that do sometimes list unsurfaced byways as roads and roads as unsurfaced byways.
Bottom line is, SatNavs tend to show legal RoW regardless of surface/condition.
Have you conidered Memory Map instead?

You need to checkout their status before driving then. To make sure they don't have a TRO

As above viewranger is what I use. There is a section where people post their BOAT routes which you can follow. Tried it last weekend and was spot on.

If you want to be 100% certain you are on an unsealed right-of-way with vehicular rights get in touch with either:

Local County Council rights of way officer.
Green Lane Association area rep (or neighbouring if none for that county).

GLASS is the ONLY Association which fights for your rights to use our declining network of unsealed roads, becoming a member helps this fight.

It's an iPhone app (I think it's available on android). Go to the section that says "route guides", select the 4x4 symbol and then "search by area". This is a sample in my area which others have done, it is worth double checking the routes designation first but all the routes I have done thus far have been spot on:

good point Jonny, I'd forgot to mention that...wish more folks would update entries for the lanes in the database.

I've used this app here for the iPhone
here http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/outdoors-gb-nationa...
It downloads the whole map to the phone so you not reliant on a 3G connection.
1-50k maps are £10

Memory Map all the way. Cross reference with local council "Definitive" map for updates to existing byways for the belt and braces approach ... Job Done smile
