Land Cruiser 70 Series 4.2

Does anyone run one of the above cars? I would like to get a proper 4x4 to use for shooting and general lugging of gear. It would be a car I would keep for a long time. I really like the look of the old 70 series cars that were notimported to the UK. Solid front axles, front and rear axle lockers and a 4.2 NA diesel engine. They have the look and reputation of being such a solid, reliable work horse.
I have never driven one though. I'm 6'4", would I fit? What's that non-turbo 4.2 engine like on the road? Are they as good as their online reputation indicates?
... Just to add that there are plenty on Japanese car sites, so I would be looking at importing an early 2000s version.

see i'm a full on land rover lover, and i rate them so I can't say more than that.i have a mate who hates my discovery, and in fact like you most solihull products, but only because they are the common car, being in essex he hates fords as well. i'm surprised he drives a vauxhall to be honest

Look no offence meant! I love other land rover products, its just the various 90/110 and wolf defenders that I have been driving in the army reserve for the last 15 years that get me. They are very capable vehicles but when I leave I will never drive another. The land cruiser and g-wagen took the concept further and made it better and easier to live with in mu opinion. i have a mate who hates my discovery, and in fact like you most solihull products, but only because they are the common car, being in essex he hates fords as well. i'm surprised he drives a vauxhall to be honest

I would recommend looking at the 80 series 4.2td. It's bigger, coil sprung so more comfy than the 70 series but still has solid axles, triple locking diffs and the 4.2td is a magnificent engine.
Looking at the cost of importing one (which looks like it can take a 10k purchase price in Japan to £17k on the road here) a UK 80 might be a better bet. jesta1865 said:

I would look at eBay Australia plenty on there both ute and the troopys best bet is over 10 years old as its easy to get UK registered .I have never driven one though. I'm 6'4", would I fit? What's that non-turbo 4.2 engine like on the road? Are they as good as their online reputation indicates?

4.2TD, leather, solid front axle, ARB air lockers front and rear.. mmm! ...but its done 160k miles!

Sounds OK but a UK spec 80 should have factory cross axle and center diff locks milage will be about average for it as the last ones were 1998 so 160k is fairly low ,a mate has a very tidy 1994 with 300,000 miles condition is everything !!
This one on ebay was a jap import 80. I guss the front and rear arb lockers were after market additions? skyrover said:

I drove loads in aus, mainly utes, and mainly newer tdv8 ones, they did one with a bit of space behind the seats and one with bugger all space if i remember correctly. i'm 6'3" and big like a rugby player with a belly. in the newer utes i could get the seat back enough to be comfy, didn't find them too narrow, generally enjoyed them. In the older ones without that extra few inches of cab i struggled to get the seat far enough back. It was very tight. they're nice enough to drive on the road though, i've never driven a defender but can only imagine the toyota is better on the road. the td v8 ones are ace and can sound awesome, don't sound bad as standard.4.2na is gutless, think i used one in a 79 series but cant really remember it, was about 3 years ago, regularly used one in a 105 series, it could probably keep up with traffic. that said, a lorry can keep up with traffic. i assume it'll do 70, but it wont get there quick. our speedo was knackered so i never found out what i got it to do. it was knackered though, ex mine truck with the boot chopped off and a small tray on the back, loved it, despite it having obviously lived a very had life, would have loved to have brought it back to the uk with me.
If i could buy a 79 or 105 series in the uk, i'd already have one!

Especially if you could buy one with the TDV8..... would be a beautiful machine Look at eBay AU or maybe not just too tempting!!!
Love the proper cruisers the Ozzie's have, big roo bars snorkels and basic interiors about £1800 to ship to Southampton !!
