My grand cherokee is getting a bit noisy/tappety.

Oil was last changed dec, it's not smoking and the pressure gauge is reading 3 to the next line max line is 5.4 so i think it's got decent oil pressure?

Assuming a WJ then yes that is what mine sits at, bit higher on fresh oil. Mine is getting a bit tappety as the miles build.

So would you put slightly thinner oil in? I'm using 10w30 now

According to my Jeep guy they are quite fussy on oil, I think he runs 5W/30 in mine. You could try a 10W/40 to see if it quietens down.

I find the fully synth's better as they are less affected by heat ie don't thin out as much. i belive the 4.7 has hydraulic lifters so are notorious for making a noise when cold.
euro parts were doing fully synth for £12.00 for 5L.

Does depend on what engine you are talking about. The I6 is a tappy engine regardless of miles, mine developed a faint tick at 80k miles and is the same 160k later. Ticks on the v8 can be down to manifold leaks.

it's the 4.0 v6 engine. the ticks there only when under load even when warmed up.
