Are Dana axles interchangeable?

Does anyone know if the Dana axles on year 2000+ Jeeps, etc, can be swapped into older Jeeps from the sixties and seventies (Wranglers, Wagoneers, Cherokees, etc)?
Are there different axle widths, and if so, can one just change the wheel offsets to match the bodies?
Are there any disadvantages to the newer axles, i.e. are they just as robust?
Obviously there are plenty of different axle ratios.

There are different widths and stud paterns but anything is do able. I am putting 2003 WJ axles onto an 80's Comanche
