Land Cruiser - which one is best?
Discussion
That's no different to asking..
Land Rover.. Which one is best
there are at least 4 different "clases" of landcruiser from utility offroader, to softroader, to full on drive round the world in comfort (in the same way that you can buy a defender, a freelander or a range rover from "land rover")
What would suit you would depend on which models you are looking at, and what you want to use it for

40 series the old Jeep style , 60,80,100 series big station wagon six and eight cylinder engine .. Then there is the 75/78 series as a hard top and pick up these are
The really tough work horses , after that you have the light duty 90 and 120 series
You need to work out what you want it for and budget ???!!!maybe if its to tow a caravan and go through snow a 90 series would be fine ,
If you want to do a overland adventure then a 80 /100 series would work well
If you fix plant or need to carry work gear say in a jungle or mine site then a 75/78series !!!!

Can you outline which model names are what...
The Colorado/Prado is the smaller 'cruiser (in 3- or 5-dr form) and the Amazon is the larger one. They are all simpler/more reliable compared to Land Rover Discoveries/Range Rovers and less of an aftermarket/scene in the UK than LR if you want big wheels/suspension lifts etc.
V8 petrol Amazons are a lot of car for the money due to their size and thirst.
The Defender equivalent, the 70-series, hasn't been sold in Europe in recent years but can be had as a personal import.
When the Apocalypse comes all that will remain are cockroaches and 70-series Land Cruisers.
The 80 series is the daddy, live axles front and rear, triple electric locking diffs, coil sprung all round and the beastly 4.2td engine. The 100 series is more refined and comfortable but has IFS and no front locker so is probably not quite as capable off road. It has an even more powerful version of the 4.2td engine though and the build quality is still up there with the best.
The smaller 90 series and older 40 and 60 series are still excellent vehicles but IMHO the 80 series is the king. I miss mine and I shall be getting another as soon as finances sensibly permit.

How did you get on with the steering wheel in/out/up and down, mine is not working but will take a look in the morning.
This is number four for me, gone back to it after having a new V8 last year.
I always grab the wheel when climbing in and out, I think that wears the motor out eventually. I got mine fixed at the main dealers but it was bloody expensive for something so trivial. This is number four for me, gone back to it after having a new V8 last year.
That's a lovely face lifted 100 series, nicer wheels and upgraded centre console with satnav etc.
I've still got an old 100 series that's been beaten/thrashed/towed/pushed to death, but I just can't let it go, I may give it to my son if he passes his test in a few weeks.

All the mid 90s to around 2005 have D, 2 and 1 on the selector, which to me hints at having a 3 speed box.
There's an overdrive button on the gear selectorNo idea why they called it an overdrive as it's a proper four speed solenoid controlled box.
Ideally if you want an auto you want a 1994 80, up to 92 they had smaller brakes, and from 94 you get the 24v Diesel engines which in the uk weren't autos. If you find a post 94 auto then it's either petrol or an import, if the latter then you need to check whether it has axle lockers as they usually don't.
The autos are monster boxes- they get used in busses and trucks in unaltered form, the only thing they can suffer from is poor cooling, adding some aftermarket rads can seriously prolong the life of the box, especially if towing, or off-roading (where the bottom half of the rad tends to fill up with mud, which is exactly where the gearbox cooler is).
