I have a Warn 9500 winch fitted to my Defender 110 and the other day I managed to snap some of the strands in my steel winch cable. I thus need to replace the cable and thinking of getting 35m or so of dyneema synthetic. This is sold in different diameters starting at 6mm and I wondered what diameter to go for, bearing in mind the Defender is not a light vehicle and all my winching so far has been pulling it up steep muddy hills so under quite a load. Any thoughts? Cheers.

Also, any thoughts on the end fitting? Eye splice, hook or 'safety thimble' seem to be the choices. I have a hook on the steel cable.

Are you making full use of the winch rope or is it a short recovery where you could use a snatch block? This would affect the load seen by the rope.

There is a webpage with calculations for recovery loads, I also think it is in one of Tom Sheppard's excellent books. That might be worth a read.

This might be of use too:

Cheers will check it out.

I have a snatch block, etc but normally find I need to use almost the full length to reach an anchor point.

Synthetic rope is over 30% stronger than the same sized steel rope.

It is therefore common to go down a size, so for example my 12k winch had 12mm steel rope which I replaced with 10mm synthtic. Your 9k winch probably has 10mm steel wire which I could be replaced with a longer 9mm synthetic.
