My 4.2 patrol has died, so I need a new work truck

Looking for a cheap 4x4 that can be used as a daily driver but also wont get stuck in the mud at work, what would you recommend?

Looking at pajeros, discos and terranos,

not found one yet that is as good as an equivalently priced pajero or terrano though

Strangely I always forget about "jeep" when looking for 4x4s, how british does that make me LOL

I'd avoid Jeep diesels unless the later (03 on) 2.8 Cherokee or the 3l Grand cherokee, all earlier ones have issues (inc the merc 2.7 grand)

Hilux Surf?

Realistically though;
Do an auto trader search for 4x4's within 30 miles of your house.
Look at the best three, buy the best one.

For £2k the model isn't half as important as the mileage and maintenance it's received.

A 4.7 GC on gas will be as easy (if not easier) run than then 2.7 diesel smile

Hmmm, 4.7's seem to break when running on LPG. $l I6 engine is a better bet. But as a work vehicle they are limited on boot space

I sold mine with 160k I think on it and gas fitted from new. Been away half a year now in heavy use and the hg went because a coolant pipe popped off and it boiled, but no issues with valves etc.

I've heard plenty of 2nd or 3rd hand horror stories about the V8 on gas, but never come across one in person or online...

All cars that age have 'issues'.

FWIW - The VM donk ain't a bad engine but the 4.0 Auto is a fairly bomb-proof combo (albeit thirsty!!!).
