Hello all.

I have a puddle in each of my front footwells on my Discovery 1.
Is it most likely just the door seals, or is there a common fault for the Disco's that is something else?
I can't see anything obvious so I am assuming it's the 20 year old door seals.

Thanks, Stuart.

Check the coolant level, if it's low it could be the heater matrix. smile

There's a list of potential causes as long as your arm that can cause damp footwells on a Disco 1. It has taken me fifteen months to get mine almost watertight.

For starters: sunroof frame to roof skin leaks, blocked aircon drains, corroded inner wings, leaking door membranes (behind the door cards), door seals, blocked sunroof drains, leaking windscreen and leaking seam at the top corner of the windscreen aperture.

I had leaks from most of these bar the sunroof, but there is still a tiny amount of water that finds it's way in occasionally.

If you Google Discovery 1 water leaks, you will find plenty to keep you occupied.

Thanks very much for taking the time mate.

Landyzone is a good source of information. There is a link to a factory water ingress guide on the Discovery I forum on a thread titled "wet passenger front carpet"; it is currently on page one of the D1 forum.

So if my Discovery doesn't have a sunroof, where's best to start looking?
Assume door seals...?

One of the most common sources is corroded front inner wings. Water collects in the big trough below the windscreen and drains out of the single hole on each side and runs down over the wheelarch side of the inner wings. Unfortunately holes develop and the water goes stright through into the passenger area.

As a place to start, clear out the carpets and then spray water on the outside of the car section by section starting at the bottom and see where it leaks in. Kitchen roll spread across the floor area will show where it first appears.

The picture below shows the drain hole which is about 28mm diameter (top right) and the painted area is where I cleaned away surface rust. there were a couple of samll holes but I have seen far worse than this. Another issue is that water can get into the horizontal strengthening beam and presumably corrode the inner skin through to the interior; there's little that you can do to repair this short of major reconstruction.

If leaking inner wings are your problem, one solution to overcome the water running down the inner wings is to use some 28mm copper pipe with a soldered elbow to make up an inverted L shaped drain pipe which will fit into the top drain hole either side and drop the water direct onto the ground.

Thanks for taking the time to post all that.
I'll have to put it on the jobs list...
This last week off has given me chance to catch up on jobs on all 3 cars!

They leak from every where, the panels were well known for not fitting, so LR used sealant to make up the gaps and short falls, when they get old the sealant cracks and splits.
A mk 1 will probably have rusted through everywhere by now.
Easiest thing to do is buy waterproof leggings and wellies to drive it in.

It's a seemingly endless fight to stop the leaks. I spent last Saturday removing the dashboard to find the remaining leaks which appeared to come from the top of the bulkhead area.
Three small ones cured and one left which, as a previous poster has said, seems to be coming through a seam joint. It's in the passenger footwell on the vertical face of the inner wing about two inches in front of the leading edge of the door.
No need to ask what I will be doing this weekend!

Lol, it's keeping you busy then!?
I don't have the time to dedicate to such a minor gripe. I've got a Range Rover Classic that is going to be taking up most of my free time for the next month or so to get on the road and tidied up.

Plenty of leaks in my Disco 1 (just posted it in the "show us your offroader thread"), mainly both front footwells and rear door, all the carpets and soundproofing are gone though so it doesn't bother me much, inside was all sprayed with pickup bed liner paint (UPOL Raptor) by the previous owner so rust is'nt a problem, occasionaly i'll give the inside a wipe with a towel and a spray with WD40.

Will try and do something with it in the summer, the front inner wings are needing work anyway, not expecting to cure the leaks 100% though.
