In the late '60's (I believe 1968) legislation meant that the grille-mounted headlamps would result in Land Rovers not complying with road vehicle regulations in some countries (may well be UK), can anyone explain why/how the Jeep CJ and Wrangler series have escaped this regulation?

I don't know for sure, but I think if measured the Jeep's headlights are closer to the edge of the vehicle. The Wings tend to be narrower.

I also suspect that critically on a Jeep the headlights are almost level with the front of the car, while on an old Series when inner mounted they are also some 8"+ further back as well. Which can obstruct the light when viewed at some angles like this:

If manufactured after 1972 they must be no more "400 millimetres from the outer edges of the widest part of the vehicle"

Logical deductions...I didn't realise how far from the edges the grille mounted headlamps were until I used my Dad's Series One last night - the photos of the Jeeps reinforce how wide Land Rover wings are!
