STP oil treatment will work to add ZDDP to the engine oil, and Halfords sells it.
One thing, and maybe its just me, but I've had this happen twice to me on 4.0 inline 6s.... Check the oil pressure sending unit that's on the right hand side of the block, looks like a small canister, these can cause a nasty oil leak.
10W30 is fine for these. Manufacturer oil change intervals are 5-6k miles on them, most people here go 3-4k.

USA based by some UK'ers on there now. Go to the WJ section and ask away, they seem a helpful bunch.
I run the 2.7crd so different engine/gearbox combo. Lucky they have a desiel/export model forum too

axles use 75w140 if quadradrive (doubtful, check badge by gear shifter) or if quadratrac (most 4litres are) 75w80 gear oil
Transfer case is a special on these, jeep dealers do it at around £10 a litre, although it is only really a rebadged agricultural oil (mobilagri is one they used) but less hassle/expense to get from a dealer in small quantities.
Gearbox is AFT4+, easy enough to get hold of.
The 4l I6 is the best of the engines, mine is at 242,000 miles on just servicing and a cam chain swap.

What sort of engine oil do i need to get, from halfords if possible as i have a trade card, i've read up i need high zinc content oil. 10w 40 or 5w 30?
Also planning on replacing autogearbox oil etc what do i need?
it's an old design motor which prefers frequent oil changes over expensive synthetic and long intervals. Also planning on replacing autogearbox oil etc what do i need?
use any 40 weight oil.
30 is a bit too thin for this engine

Checked the owners manual and it states 5/30.
Don't get me wrong... it will run on 5w30 and you might even see a slight mpg increase and better throttle response over something like 15w40.
What chrysler/jeep state in the manual is mostly an effort in marketing and increased mpg claims, over what best for the engine though.
After spending a bit of time on the Jeep forums, the apparent accepted wisdom is to stick with 40 weight after several members have had their oil analysed.
Wear rates were a fair bit higher with the thinner stuff... although not terrible.
Ultimately the 4.0 is an incredibly strong and durable engine and is very unlikely to let you down... mine has been faultless in the time I've owned it.

Thanks for the advice , i'll go for 5w40 or maybe 10w40 then. What chrysler/jeep state in the manual is mostly an effort in marketing and increased mpg claims, over what best for the engine though.

Was your jeep very tappety? mine is quite noisy (i thought the straight 6 would be a quiet engine) been to the garage and they think it's tappets and quite a cheap fix perhaps just needs oil change plus on a jeep forum quite a few people have said these engines are quite noisy.
could be a leaky/cracked exhaust manifold also can sound tapity and is a common problem. Mine is leaking a bit.
does it sound like this?

Aftermarket manifolds are plentiful and reasonably priced.
EDIT: it seems like they changed the manifold design on the 99 onwards jeeps so yours probably does not suffer the same problem as mine.
Try a thicker oil or run some detergent heavy diesel oil through it and change the oil after a few hundred miles.

WG exhaust don't suffer from cracking like the earlier ZG ones as they are 2 piece.
Do you have the invoice for the last oil change? Do you know whats actually in it at the moment?
I picked it up dirt cheap and have very little history but last documented oil change was 2009!Do you have the invoice for the last oil change? Do you know whats actually in it at the moment?
It's booked in the garage next tues, is it worth changing the oil this week or wait until next week and let the garage do engine flush and refill? it's not going to be used much this week.
I've got some mobile super 2000 10w40 out in the shed.
Whilst it's there going to get all fluids/filters done so at least i know when stuff needs doing in the future.

I would let the garage put whatever cheap oil they use and run it for a few day's before changing the oil again and putting your good stuff in I've got some mobile super 2000 10w40 out in the shed.
