I see a fair number of tyre related threads but this one is very specific advice I am trying to help a friend out with.

He has a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 V8 Limited XS. He is looking for a decent road tyre with a bit of a shoulder on it for going over grass fields etc. nothing stupidly extreme. I used to have a P38 Range Rover with Pirelli Scorpions on it and that is the sort of tyre he would like.

My question is could anyone with one of these cars kindly give some experienced based advice on what would be a good tyre? The tyre placard explaining what the car can take is missing and it currently has 235/65R17 104V road tyres on it with no shoulder at all.

Any help from other owners of these would be massively appreciated as a starting point for tyre choice. Thanks very much!

I have a 4litre WJ & went for General ATs in the end, massive tread depth and not seen a downside yet. They may cost me some MPG but at 18.6 overall I don't care. They do not seem to be significantly noisier either.

Another vote for the General AT's.

Havnt noticed any difference in mpg, when the radio is off i noticed a very slight noise increase over the road tyres I had before. With the radio on I cant notice any difference.

thanks to you all! Sounds great. As I do not know about these cars, no reason why the AT would not go on the 4.7v8 re speed rating or anything like that? Much appreciated.

No reason at all. They have 10mm of tread to start with mine have done 24K highish speed miles & still have around 7-8mm.

Yep as in Yam - Michelin pilots on that tho!
The UHP's were great in the snow on the jeep - not the last word in grip but good fir a road bias tyre.

Nice, I have 2CT's on the Gixxer. Rate them massively. Thanks again all, he has the tyres on now and very happy with them and not really any road noise increase like you all said. Thanks again.

I went with Cooper AT's 255-65/17.... As they're a bit oversize they do touch the arch liners on full lock.... But grip and noise wise they seem ok...

Cooper ATR's are good, General Grabber's better though (from experience).

I was able to buy a set of 16" wheels and general tyres for the price of a cheaper brand in 17".

Just remembered I still have the 17s in the shed actually hehe
