Greetings serious offroader types, I need advice please.

I confess I have a 2wd, but I would like to improve the off road / winter ability, but only buy 2 tyres. It has 4 m+s rated tyres at present, so can you advise me what would go good on the front end.

Cheers
C

What is it, and what sort of offroad are you looking at?

A diesel duster. Need it to handle light to medium dirt track, especially snow. I could stretch to 4 tyres but all are brand new! Thanks. I didn't go all wheel drive as it was about 2.2k more!

Erm, how about an AT tyre with snow rating?

I used to use a Bridgestone Revo2 on my old Isuzu in the States. Did trails as well as snow perfectly fine.

Also used by my brother n his Pinin, which was used a lot in winter, and also offroad.

Excellent, you're going in the direction I hoped! I had thought AT tyres, say BFG or Yoko Geolandars.. But will this cause any on road stability problems? I realise it will never be an off roader but for 180 quid it could be a lot better than it is. Example, it cut a nice big groove getting off a grass bank. Something I would like to avoid! Many thanks.

No broad stability problems. The tyres were run n well over 30 degree heat, down to well below freezing, and they worked very well on both continents.

Grass is always a bit of a terror, especially wet. I have seen 4x4's with MT's sat there spinning their tyres on wet grass. Regular road tyres can be a nightmare.

All I can say is that those revo's coped with mud, snow, dry stuff, etc.

Ta, how about the presumably stiffer AT side walls being too direct versus the squashy HT tyres on the rear? I really don't want to make a tail happy car! Sooner buy four tyres!

Well, I would change all 4 if it was me, depending on your budget, I suppose. It is a Duster, you shouldn't be getting to the point of drifting, I imagine.

What are the current tyres? As people have said wet grass is a 'mare. FWIW we have Kleber Quadraxers on SWMBO's 2wd hack and they've coped with everything we've thrown at it - muddy lanes, snow and ice, hot A-roads - with impressive competence.

Continental cross contacts. Very mild tread pattern. And I'm trying to avoid having two snow rated tyres for insurance reasons...
