Hi,

Totally new to offroad and 4x4's, so advise greatly appreciated.

I've been considering something along the lines of a Hilux / Land Cruiser or Discovery for a new toy and load lugger, and I need 4 or 5 seats with the max boot space. Budget is up to £2500, so thinking 3rd gen Hilux, but having never been in any of these I wonder which offers the best boot space? Perhaps there is an alternavive in my price range that I've not yet considered?

Cheers for the help

Paul

Feel I should expand a little, will be used mostly on the road (very little gentle off roading) and would also like the option to bed down inside as well. Think the Discovery might be too small load space.

Hi,

Really you can't beat a pickup for rear load space, you get loads of it on a single cab pick up and you will get more than plenty on a double cab. Things to consider though are:

1) do you need to access the back from the cab (pickup no good for this)
2) if you go pick up then it will have to have a decent canopy on to match up to the weatherproof-ness and security that a SUV will offer.

You will be able to sleep in a double cab pick up, but will be a bit scrunched up. A disco etc will also fit you if you fold seats down, but it won't be comfy..

Sources: loads of cold night sleeping in various 4x4s after events and party's!

Cheers.

Hi wheat,

Thanks for your response. (Been away for a week hense the slow reply!).

Really I'd like to have access to the back from inside the cab, and would rather not be scrunched up when tring to sleep, as I may end up useing this once every couple of weeks or so. Thanks for the info on the disco, writes one option off for me.

What would you advise with 5 seats and most luggage space and suitable for sleeping in?

Still interested in a hilux, Which has the bigger load space, a pre 96 hilux or a 96 on? Perhaps a Cruiser would be a better choice with the rear seats removed?

I wonder if a small van might be a better choice for the extra storage, (could be 5 of us with bergains plus additional gear on occassion), but a 4x4 would just be way cooler!

Seconded. Very good off road and you can kit out with a water tank for tea making ect ect.

I think they are LWB Pajero/SHoguns underneath, so plenty of spares and forum support available smile

Slept in my Trooper a few times with seats down. It was a 1999 model.

Also Jeep Grand Cherokee, seats drop flat.

Grands are way too small inside to doss in unless you are very verticly challenged. Patrol or LC would get my vote, budget is your limiting factor

It depends how tall you are, how often you want to sleep in it and how comfortable you want to be, and then how "off-road" you need. Sleeping in a car is cold and means fiinding space for your luggage.

Hilux pick up beds (and Defender 110s) are about 6ft long, the crew cab is more like 4ft and less secure. The Landcruiser boot is surprisingly low so although I suspect the Disco boot is marginally shorter it makes up for that with height.

If you want more of a capable camper then you can get 4x4 Transits and VW Transporters, but both are fairly rare and the VW has a scene so is pricey. I suspect a RWD Transit with decent tyres could get further off road than most would need. alternatively there's the Mazda Bongo which will need less work to be the car you want as it has the seats, curtains, popup roof etc and comes in 4x4. The Delica has already been mentioned.

All these options (bar the 2wd Transit) come at a price though due to desireability so you might be better off all round splashing out on a roof tent and putting it on top of a Legacy or awd Volvo

3rd Gen Hilux Surf 3.0l
Although, for that money you might have to go for 2nd gen.

The surf is the SUV/estate version of the pickup.
It has the largest load bay of any standard 4x4 estate except the Disco 3/4.
I have measured them all.

There's a good owners forum based in the UK that may be able to help more - Google will help you find it. smile
