Morning all,

Considering a small off roader for fun and the odd snowy day commute. It will be a third car and over around 3000 miles a year. The Suzuki Jimny is the current favourite although I have also considered a Mitsubishi Pinin. Budget is up to £2000 for the car and £500 for a decent set of wheels and tyres.

I want a small vehicle for a number of reasons including:

1. It will fit in the garage together with bicycles, lawnmover, and other stuff.
2. My other half will also drive it now and again – she prefers smaller cars.

Modifications will be limited to decent off road tyres and ,perhaps, a small suspension lift.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

It might be a touch out of budget.
But I'm saying.. . .
Jeep Wrangler.

It's good for the winter and off road.
It's also bloody lovely with the roof off on a sunny day.

For a small offroader I don't think you can beat a Jimny.

The Jimny and Pinin are quite different vehicles tbh. The Jimny is a proper purpose built off roader with huge capabilities. The Pinin isn't.

Not to say the Pinin isn't good, but it's more a Rav4 or Vitara alternative. The Jimny however ranks along side the Wrangler and Defender for off road ability, construction and design.

To this end the on road performance of the Jimny isn't quite as good as some of the other alternatives, but it is a lot more capable off road.

If you think you'll be doing some proper off roading then Jimny at this budget is the sensible answer. If it's more for snowy conditions and lighter off road work I'd be tempted to look at a MK1 Rav4. More power, more peppy engine and better on road manners. But actually has quite a capable 4wd system.

I didn't say it was like a Rav4. But with IFS the Vitara is more road biased than a Jimny.

You said vitara or rav4 alternative, putting those in the same boat.
There is more to an offroader than whether it has IFS or not.
A lot more vitaras are used off road than jimnys

I don't deny they are used off road and can be more capable than many other vehicles in its class (in deed very capable when setup correctly), however Suzuki pitched and sold it against the likes of the Rav4, Pinin and even Freelander. Hence the Grand Vitara and the fact there is a lot more 'urban trim' options available and more powerful engines.

The Jimny is the hardcore off roader of the two.

I've got a little jimny on a 2000 plate. Only use it for off road playing, have a set of all terrains on it. Great fun car

I go laning with all the usual suspects and the only thing I can't really do is really deep water due to no snorkel

Don't forget the older SJ, for £2k you could get a sorted one with all the bits.

Forester? May be a little to big for the garage, but plenty of potential

Thanks for all the responses. Jimny looks like the best bet. I'll probably just buy a decent set of AT tyres to start with although I might be lucky and buy a car with these already fitted.
