Hi guys, I've just bought my first 4x4, nothing hardcore just a 2003 shogun warrior swb 3.2. It has road tyres so I'm not looking for anything hardcore.

I'm between oxford and swindon, I've googled but can't find any places where I can have a little fun.

Does anybody know of any places I can go to? i dont mind paying for a few hours so long as its not £££.

Have a look here, list of pay and play sites. Most sites offer different routes/areas depending on your vehicle and of experience.

We used to use that paynplay website all the time.

However a word of caution, it's very rarely updated and a lot of the sites are no longer operating.

We are also looking for sites within an hours drive of our Solihull location, but there does not seem to be many any more.

As an example, we used to go to wildmoor in bromsgrove, Aston cantlow close to Henly, and Avon Dasset close to Banbury.

As far as I know these are now all closed, so that does not leave many in our area.

The only one I can see now is wagtail, but I can't find a lot of info.

Anyone get any other suggestions please?

Am in the same boat, solihull based, not sure where to start with using my landrover (again, nothing hard core). The paynplay website isn't really helping. Going to have a chat with GLASS but I find the attitude on some of the forums very negative and condescending..... Want to meet some of them before joining to see if its just how it comes across on the forums.

Midland Over owners club. Try the rtv trialling. Usually non-damaging - well, we had a 13 plate defender come through unscathed last week.

also run occasional play days, but the land is a problem, as we used to use Aston Cantlow

Salisbury plain is a good start to give you a taste. Ive been a couple of times with 2 guys that know it well and were great guides with their knowledge and experience.
Lots of it is open to the public usually but I advise doing a lot of homework or better still taking someone in the know. The regulars get really upset by newbies tearing the place apart and going where they shouldnt. It's patrolled by wardens who come down on you hard if your off piste. All said its great if you behave. Take at least 2 vehicles, a map of the plane and tow strap as a minimum.

Speak to your local GLASS rep, I look after Worcestershire and know the Wiltshire rep. We are more thank happy to take those new to green laning on an introductory run either as passengers or following in their own car. We will also make sure that you understand exactly what you need to do if we do come across any tricky bits.

The advantage of being a GLASS member is legal back up should you be accused of trespass or illegal use.

Agreed I have recently rejoined Glass, and was previously a member of TRF when we rode Green Lanes on our Enduro Bikes.

With all the limitations on where to drive ( and ride!) these days, it pays to prepare in advance and go with all info before taking on a route.

This was set up by Tread Lightly for Wales. It's Wikipedia style so you can add new ones. Nothing in England yet, but please add if you know any.

There's one near Aldermaston: http://www.4x4-withoutaclub.co.uk/main/sitemap.jpg but I've never been.

I'm GLASS Rep for Wiltshire. PM me karl922 if you're interested in laning (not off roading) as I live close to you. If you drive green lanes, you should be a GLASS member. With the back-up and support they provide, it's a no brainer. http://www.glass-uk.org

Look up GLASS on facebook as well.

Are you wanting to go 'off roading' or 'off road' as in green lanes ? If its green lanes you can check online on Trailwise and local council maps, also paper maps available. I would check the lane status with relevant council before you drive them.
Off roading will mean finding a Pay & Play, there is one in the Reading area if that is close enough.
The two meanings are completely different to how you should drive them..............which is something many people don't understand therefore resulting in little choice compared to what there could be.

I did Wagtail a couple of Weekends ago with BirtyDastards Jeep CLub, all 4x4's are welcome not just Jeeps.

There is Coney Green Farm (Ribbo to those who know it) in Stourport, excellent site for all makes and models, the next Birty Event is in September there.

Wildmoor closed down some years ago which is a pain as its 1/2 mile from me.

I think there is one over Ironbridge as well, will find the details.

4x4 without a club near Aldermaston is a good, if slightly small course. Membership costs £10 / year and then you pay £20 each time you visit. It's really well marshalled and has 3 levels of courses to tackle, from gentle trails to near vertical, truck breaking stuff.
