When attempting to cross a ditch at an angle in the approved 'first one front wheel, then the other' way in order to avoid getting stuck, don't make the angle so great that the first rear wheel goes in at the same time as the second front wheel, because then you will be cross-axled and stuck!

silly

When deciding to drive up in the Adirondacks one winter, go with someone else, or at least with some recovery equipment, as that bloody snowmobiles who shot out of a trail on your left making you go in a snow filled ditch, miles from anywhere, in sub zero conditions, means you don't have to spend hours digging your way out with sticks, and jack handles, and trying to use car mats as some sort of grippage device.

Also, avoid snowmobiles.

Thick sticky mud and a slipping clutch equals stranded motor and a long walk to find someone to recover you !!

The gap isn't always big enough to fit through.

Also, just because one car can cross X, doesn't mean you can as well.

Mud can hide large sump breaking rocks. frown

Always get underbody protection. Possibly the best investment you can get. Mine cost me precisely £0. smile

I have 4mm steel checker plate as a front diff/sump protector, and the same 4mm steel plater across the transfer case area. I have to cut the last piece to connect the 2 when the weather cheers up.

(Better fixings at the moment. they were temporary)

Have the checker plate drawn out to the correct shape, and just needs grinding up to gap the space between the 2. Cut it, clean it, paint it, and job's jobbed.

Once funds allow, getting this at a decent price. Shall get the rest of the underbody protection in time as/when they come up at good prices. I have no problems with 2nd hand stuff as long as it's in good condition.

Have to split cash on mods and maintenance as it's needing a suspension refresh. Wear and tear items which i knew would need doing.

Don't try and follow a Challenger into a re-plen area when driving a Land Rover.....

It was a few years ago and the moral is look at the track of the ruts as well as the depth smile
