Vitara,s dead long live the x-trail ?
Discussion
Just wondering what people think ? My vitara needs to be replaced, I run 2 cars the vit is used as the workhorse car with trips to the tip and a little off rd work an shooting etc and my main car (mondeo zetec) used for work and trips home.
I have 2 houses 1 in Norfolk and 1 in wales so every other weekend im on the M4 doing 800 ish miles over a weekend, looking to get a z4 in the summer but dont want to put massive miles on it so now the vit is dead looking to spend 2.5-3k ish to replace it with a 4x4 that can do a gentle bit of off rd on the farm buts going to be happy with a motorway slog every couple of weeks and not take forever and a day to get to wales
Dont know why but seem to be thinking about the x-trail quite a bit anyone got any opinions or other ideas ?

The X-Trail isn't a bad vehicle and potentially quite good on fuel. I think there have been some engine issues over the years though and the usual dual mass flywheel problems that plague so many modern diesels.
They are probably more car like than 4x4, although the square shape does make it feel quite van like and large to drive.
If you do off road one I'd be careful of bashing the underside up.

I've been very pleased with my '04 X-Trail and I've just ordered a new one to replace it. There were turbo/intercooler problems with the early ones but that's sorted; old ones will have failed by now and been replaced with the fixed version.
If you check out x-trail-uk.co.uk there have been very few DMF problems.
Commonest (but not "common") problems seem to be seized brake caliper pins, fuel-pump suction control valves, and rusty sumps. Plus of course EGR and DPF issues if you do mostly short runs, but that's true for all diesels.
