XJ Transfer Box - advice/help
Discussion
Got an XJ, (97 Limited 4l Auto) which I'm slowly falling in love with.... BUT I have an issue which I think is with the transfer box.... (probably due to me not reading the manual and thinking part time 4 wheel drive was it automatically switching between 2 and 4 wheel drive)
can happily change to part time 4 and full time 4, but going back to 2 wheel it gets stuck in part time 4... and then won't go into full time or 2 wheel... and takes a lot shuffling backward and fowards to get it to drop into 2 wheel.
Basically is there a nack to this or is it knackered....... easy fix ?
cars only cost £1k... 68k on the clock... body work was supurb until slide into in snow..... don't want to fix the body work if this is a costly major prob.

Not sure about the auto but I have a 2.5td with a manual box and you should only use 4 wheel drive on slippy suffices. I think the manual says snow for 4x4 high and dirt for 4x4 low. If you use on tarmac because the car has no centre dif as a permanent 4 wheel drive has you get a symptom called dif wind up this could damage the drive train also make it hard to shift from 4 to 2 wheel drive

The transfer box is different on the petrol to the diesel. The petrol has a 4x4 option for tarmac (full-time) as well as part-time for loose surfaces only when the centre diff is locked. The issue you describe about difficulty returning to 2wd ic common and not serious. The main reason for this seems to be a difference in tyre size or pressure across the front axel. Even a very slight difference such as one tyre worn more than the other can affect this. Ideally all tyres should be the same make with equal wear and pressure or you will have difficulty shifting back. Also the more you use the transfer box and shift in and out of 4x4 the easier it will shift.

Just to say a massive thank you ..... tyre pressure 2psi diff across fron axel..... drops into 2W drive every time witha reassuring clunk through selector..... I really thought I had buggered it...Hoover. said:

Ha!! - Small world..!!I love these Jeeps, am on my 2nd one as the first was written off by a russian white van man who decided it would be better to ram my parked car rather than the tree he was about to hit!
I've got 2 other mates who have since bought a Jeep XJ, and have another asking after them right now, he just can't find a good one.... I am convinced these are classics in the making, if only because they go on for ever and are such a cool shape! Just wish they didn't drink so much!! (although I guess an equivalent V8 Landie would be pretty juicy too...??)
Say hi if you see me in Tonbridge station car park!
