ML320CDI underbody protection
Discussion
Hoping not to get laughed off the forum but...
Our MY08 Mercedes ML320CDI (W164) is currently an entirely road-oriented car but since we put some Grabber AT tyres on it for the snow 2 years ago, we realised just how competent a 4x4 it could be and intend to use it for some "light" off roading. This will not include 2-metre deep rivers, mud baths or quarries, but some muddy/grassy/slippery inclines and gravelly/unpaved roads.
It will also be pressed into service pulling my twin axle caravan which I intend to take to more remote locations around the coastal regions of the UK and western Europe.
We intend to keep the ML to the bitter end so although I'm not bothered about its resale value, I would like to keep it "nice", and to this end I'm after either a set of Mercedes underbody skid plates or some idea where I could mount some custom-made ones.
I have heard that the genuine Mercedes items exist but info about them is sketchy - they are listed in the Mercedes "offroad package" but no-one actually seems to have any that I can find on-line.
To be honest, having a set made up from some thick duralumin wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea but I would need to be confident that the mounting points on the car were up to the job. I'd rather not drill the car - I hope there are standard mountings available or someone has an idea where I could suitably bolt them to.
Does anyone know anything about these cars?
