Jeep steering / near death terror...
Discussion
My modified, 4.0 litre YJ has exhibited a bit of vague steering recently. As it's on a 4 inch body and suspension lift, running 35 inch tyres, it's always been a little 'interesting' with it's lack of steering accuracy, as one might expect.
Anyway, as it got so bad recently, I suspected the steering box adjustment, or maybe a worn out bush or two.
When I inspected today - I did not expect to find:
The steering box, held onto the right-hand chassis rail by four big bolts - holding on by only one bolt at the top, with the lower bolt sheared. And the two underneath bolts, floating around within the broken, corroded lower chassis rail
So basically my death was averted by a single remaining bolt, from four bolts which were supposed to originally hold the steering box, now three of which were now useless!
So - lesson is - regularly check your off-roaders, folks!!!!

.......and don't fk about with the suspension and steering geometry, otherwise the steering box might start shearing itself off its mounts instead of turning the wheels.Edited by anonymous-user on Sunday 2nd September 01:03

Eh, a bit uncalled for, no? Is this not a motoring forum where car related fun, and modified off-road silliness is celebrated??

Not at all. You started this thread to pass on some important information. Crossflowkid & myself were merely pointing out that the problems you encountered were of your own doing... Something we too feel is very important and something people often forget when 'modifying' their cars.DEFINITELY off to Mumsnet soon if things don't improve around here
If you want to talk about off-road silliness, start a thread celebrating off-road silliness... QED

But yeah, fair comment I guess

Jeep steering boxes are connected to the wheels somehow? Turn the wheels as in steer them, not turn as in rotate.
Last year, I had a test-drive of a Grand Cherokee I was considering as a winter "shed". I had only driven about 50 yards up the road before realising the steering was seriously FUBAR'd as the car wouldn't travel in a straight line, but I was in a one-way system so couldn't get back without a 1 mile round-trip (at about 10 mph). That was scary!
When I got back, I told the trader who was selling it that something was wrong with the steering - he said (everyone join in now): "They're all like that."

Admittedly the steering on my Cherokee XJ was shocking when I first had it, when on the move it needed constant correction. But as part of fitting a suspension lift, I got the alignment checked, and holy crap it couldn't have been further out. Fronts were +13 and -11 respectively! Now within tolerances and the steering has been absolutely transformed. It now feels like a different car to drive!
