Trip to the plains, and Buzludzha peak
Discussion
Pic heavy, sorry
Well, my brother Si, and his SJ, and myself in my Vit, went over the mountains towards Shipka, and the plains on the other side. Stayed in a little campsite outside of Kazanlak, which was basic, but nice enough, (was only a tenner).
Started the day heading into the hills up a small trail we found on a map.
You can see the lake we get to tomorrow, which is in fact today, unless you read this tomorrow... If you read it after that, you're on your own, I've no idea when it was.
Really bright, and hot day, until you get in the trees. Soon goes dark.
View out from the hills down one of the logging trails dotted about the place.
It hasn't rained for night on 2 months here, so the slightest bit of damp gets some attention. Clickable video pics.
Anyway, worked our way down out of the mountain, and went to have a look over by the reservoir, but it was dark, so no pics. We went back the next day.
So then next day, and we went out onto the plains over by the reservoir.
You can see the famous Concrete Flying Saucer up on Buzludzha Peak. We drive right up there later.
More tourist stylee shots.
So, after some coffee at the local bar on the other side of the dam, we headed off to see what we could find around the lake.
Relaxing...
On the plain itself, there are tens of these man made mounds. The best we can figure them for is tied in with the story of the Shipka pass, and the battles that went on between the Russians and the Turks back in the late 1800's. Some still have gun emplacement constructions on them, and the one in the next pic had a foxhole thingy on one side.
We had to go up it.

So, on up a back road to Buzludzha...
So, the car park and the normal road up to the Flying Saucer was closed, so we went through the back trails to get up as close as we could.
Pic from the cross on the summit of the next hill we magnificently climbed in only our flip flops. Coming down was 'amusing'.
Pretty much level with the FS on the next hill
They look quite small down there, and Si had left his lights on...
Si has some more pics, so I may upload more stuff if I get my hands on them.
