After many years of corporate grind (maybe not that many but certainly enough!) my brain is harbouring ambitions of a long overland roadtrip of maybe 8-12 months. I’m starting with a complete blank canvas; no vehicle, no particular desire to do a specific route.

Given the above, does anyone know any good sources of inspiration for destinations, vehicles, practicalities etc? I’m more looking for forums / general webpages where I can read as many options as possible (as opposed to a lone traveler’s blog).

At the minute I’m considering Africa (as my other half would prefer this as a destination) and I’d love to make the journey in a Defender (as my earliest driving experiences were in Defenders). I realize this may not be the most practical option so Discovery / Land Cruisers are not out of the question.

Any advice gratefully received!

This. See my profile for a blog, we couldn't take anything other than a Defender.

Diflock forums have a good overland section.

Which vejcile to use is a whole other debate on itys own.

However, I will quote an article from Land Rover Monthly.

'Our Defender has been 100% reliable on our trip. Its only needed a new radiator, major chassis repairs and two new half shafts'

wink

However, I do understand your reasons why you would want to use a Defender. I fantasise about taking a Discovery Commercial on an overland trip somewhere smile

Hello,

There is an overland traveller show on in October at whilton locks karting facility. It looks quite good, plenty of people to talk to regarding ideas and experience.

Maybe worth a visit, I am going. May even camp with my defender even though it's 20 mind down the road :-)
