Dana-44 diff rebuild or replace
Discussion
rear pinion bearing is shot and the howling is starting to drive my crazy on my 98 grand cherokee.
I've seen replacement second hand axles going cheap but not sure I want to risk the same problem.
Is it worth rebuilding the diff or should I chance replacing the axle?
What kind of price am I looking at for a rebuild?

I've seen repair kits from the indies for around £150-170 or so. If you live in the south east I'd phone Mid-Kent Chrysler & ask Terry what he reckons 01634 819774 Otherwise Chatham transmissions are very good. It depends on how much running you've done & if you've knackered the CWP. If you have a rebuild on a s/h axle may be on the cards.I've seen replacement second hand axles going cheap but not sure I want to risk the same problem.

started howling a few weeks ago after changing the rear diff oil.
Oil is correct (opie oils supplied), so i'm chalking it up as coincidence although the pinion seal is leaking as well.
Unfortunately I live in rural northumberland, so a trip to Kent is perhaps a bit too far for me to travel.
Might give them a ring all the same though..

In which case pop onto jeep-club.co.uk & see if someone there can recommend someone a bit more local. But Terry is worth a ring.Oil is correct (opie oils supplied), so i'm chalking it up as coincidence although the pinion seal is leaking as well.
