I know the jeep wrangler and the series LR's can fold down their screens..

my question is... why have that feature at all? and can the newer defenders fold their screens?

I didn't even know that the windscreen on the current Wrangler could do that!

I think originally it was a military requirement to give them a forward firing ability which was then carried on throughout the model years.

It is also handy to be able fold the screen flat when travelling through thickets and brush (or jungle) that could break the glass.

I think it may have also had something to do with transporting them too

I've seen pictures of LR Lightweights stacked up too but can't find anything on google.

No, I'm still surprised they take the weight though, aren't they just sheet steel?
There appears to be some sort of brace across the "door" opening of the lower jeep, although I suppose it could be the bottom of some pallete like thing to spread the weight rather than a brace.

My 90 can, later Defenders can but you need to replace the screen mountings with hinges which are standard parts. No idea as to why other than in typical Land Rover style - because they always did...

I think I'd rather get those wire jobbies that run from the bonnet to the windscreen and push the branches out of the way than have them hit me in the face with the windscreen down.

Can't for the life of me remember what they're called.

Had the top down but yet to take the doors off my TJ, and will have to leave the windscreen up now I've rammed a sound bar in there (runs front to back instead of across).

It is interesting that you mention those wire things. I was looking at a Landrover the other day with them fitted and I didn't know what they were for. Now I know, thanks.

You are thinking of bush cables/limb risers.
