Thinking about a 4x4!
Discussion
Without re-starting the debate again but IMHO for 2k there are more capable trucks than a smurf or pajero.
The budgets sensible money for a tidy enough disco, stick it on some muds and it will see you right.
Jimny is plenty capable for the money but might not be "manly" enough for you.

I've not got much experience of Smurfs, but I've yet to find anywhere a stock Disco on muds could go that I wouldn't be happily able to follow in my Shogun. The budgets sensible money for a tidy enough disco, stick it on some muds and it will see you right.

There aren't many trucks with a factory-fitted rear diff lock to be had for the OP's £2k budget for a start!
For £2k you could get a nice late model Cherokee JK (c1999-2001). Go for the 4l petrol. It has a cracking auto, low ratio transfer box, locking centre diff, rear LSD all as standard. VERY capable and unlike Landies it works on tarmac at over 70mph without feeling like you're driving something agricultural. ;-)

A good SJ is far more manly than a Jimny (well I would say that as an SJ owner).
Infact mine could soon be for sale if I can come to part with some of my manly-ness
Now, as an ex SJ owner i love them but i still can't get my head round why in the UK people will spend well clear of a grand for a good SJ or late sammi when early Jimny's are available from £800? IMHO they lack the real collector appeal of an LJ and the minor advances of the power steering and coils offered on Jimny's. I have a disco that i take to a pay and play on a regular basis. the above is sound advice. there's a lad takes a diesel cherokee, its very very capable. he also has another diesel one for the road, both so far have also proved reliable.Tommy Saxondale said:

Why does he need a second one for the road? This would suggest that it's not wonderfully built if he can't rely on it to survive pay and play days often enough to work as an every day road truck.Kermit power said:

That depends on how seriously you play. Of course everyone will swear blind that they play the hardest( even at P&P level). Nothing is unbreakable, whatever the budget. Sounds sensible to me. There isn't a 4x4 made or built that does both very well, it's all a compromise somewhere along the line. Kermit power said:

Because he uses his off-road one properly, and its been heavily modified, making it not as nice to drive on the road. and also if he does happen to break it and he didnt run a second vehicle, he would be st out of luck the following morning for work!Pajero Exceed (LWD 7 seater). Did not really have any problems with it but check the 'Pitman arm' (wobble in steering) and also check that the lights that show what drive is connected (2x, 4x) go on or off when selected else it could mean hydrolic (sp?) problems.
They are also not a fixed 4x4 and can run just rear wheel drive in 'normal' driving.
Great car and would have another tomorrow.
