Hi just looked at a very tidy Grand Cherokee today on a '02 plate with 75k miles on the clock. Only trouble was that it did not have complete service history & the gearbox has been replaced/reconditioned at a cost of £1900 about 3000 miles ago. The car is for sale at a shade under £5000, but is superficially in very good condition & i believe there is always room for negotition.

I say replaced/reconditioned because I have not seen the receipt for the work done. I would obviously check this out if i were to go ahead with a purchase. I have been assured by the dealer that he has all the paper work including receipts & old mot's. The Car has a full ticket on it anyway & i have been reading that the auto boxes have been known to fail on some Grands at or around 60,000 miles.

My question is: Having the box redone is this a good thing (as it hopefully shouldn't need doing again) or is it a bad sign, ie the car could be trouble?

Answers on a post card please, would you buy or avoid this car?

I wouldn't bother personally. Chances are it just has a box from a breakers in it. Plus the boxes don't tend to die on them, admittedly they are sealed for life efforts from merc but they seem to be holding up well (the engine spits its dummy out first) There are loads about for that money with full history, walk away.

BTW was it whatcar or such that say the boxes fail? I have plenty of mates running round in 99-04 Grands and the gearbowes don't break, they have a speed sensor that fails (cost around £20 to replace, 5min job) but the boxes don't fail.

I've got an 04 in black, with 90k and fsh, cosmetically its ok, not concours but tidy enough.

it's in with Mercedes now having a sensor replaced on the box due to It getting stuck in limp mode.
I'll take less than 5k for an easy sale ( not advertised it yet) as need the money before Xmas ideally
Pm if your interested I'm in essex

I had issues with what I believed was my gear box, I towed home 1000mile with a fully loaded caravan in only 3rd gear.

V8 was great, pulled away in 3rd and maintained 60 whilst towing. Ok fuel was a laugh.

Anyway, I replaced both gearbox speed sensors (cheap enough from main dealer) and it the end it turned out to be the Throttle position sensor, cheap as chips to replace and now perfect.

So as SCRW states, the gear boxes do mega miles, my mates has 186k and going strong and its unlikely a decent mechanic would have changed the box, so keep looking.

And for an LPG one.
