Hopefully the question isn't as daft as it seems...

We live on a very muddy/leafy/sandy lane with very little traffic, and many of the locals are complacent when it comes to slowing for the various blind bends and crests. So as SWMBO's hack needs new tyres I find myself looking to mitigate the risk.

She doesn't need tyres that are the last word in dry grip and handling, and it's not a 4x4 so all terrains are a tad OTT. I've been looking at things like Rainsports, but leaves and mud don't clear in quite the same way as standing water so I wonder if something like an all-season tyre (like a Quatrac) might be better.

So, any suggestions?

I've got Quatracs on a vehicle that's used on wet, muddy lanes and to be honest they're hardly any different from summer tyres despite being M&S marked. In the cold they are great, but mud and leaves are much like a normal tyre.

What size do they need to be?

Winter ones.

Get a remap at the same time.

205/55/16, so pretty much the most common size.

Thanks for the info on the Quatracs, that should save me £40 a cornerhehe

Something narrow and/or large gaps in the tread (like a gravel tyre).

That way, you have more of a chance of the tyre biting through the slimey gunge on the top, straight down to the firm stuff underneath.

The downside is that they will probably wear out quicker though.

Good call, now what's the motorsport on a tarmac circuit with a non tarmac section? That should suit.

I'm thinking of rallycross, and a quick Google suggests they're all just a touch hardcorehehe

This is a rallycross tyre.... laugh

You'd want something like this if you want stage rally gravel tyres - http://www.ears.co.uk/Tyres-Maxsport-Competition-T...

They don't last long though - remember a rally tyre is not designed to last longer than a few competitive miles (I know people use part worns and use them for more than one rally) - my guess is you wouldn't get more than 2000-2500 useful miles on a road car.

LOL yes, I use Pirelli Scorpion STR on mine when doing gravel events. They're the only ones I can find that fit, but would suggest they'd be similar to the Quatracs.

I can't find the STRs (or any off-road bias tyres for that matter) in the right size so I'm looking at Kleber Quadraxer as a cheaper alternative with what looks like a wide spaced tread.

Got them fitted yesterday and impressed so far (although they wouldn't need to do much to impress over some Firestones with 3mm leftbiggrin) Interestingly they're marked M&S as well as the expected snowflake.

Judging from the usual google pictures, looks like a good choice smile
