has it got freewheel hubs on the front axles?

they would need engaging first before you get 4wd

or is it too new for them.

there should be something written on them if they are fitted and should indicate engaged or not on the hub itself.

If your Surf has auto hubs then you need to drive for a short distance before they will engage at the front. They can be prone to siezing if they have not been used for long periods.

On later models there is an automatic differential disconnect (ADD) that can fail in the off position which prevents drive to the front wheels. There is a control box under the dashboard which can suffer from earthing problems.

You need to check all the vacum pipes and the vacum tanks for leaks as this will prevent the mechanical engagement of drive to the front diff.

The simplest way of checking the drive system is to put the vehicle on axle stands and engage fourwheel drive. If the front propshaft is turning then your transfer case is ok. If the front drive shafts are also turning then the problem is at the hubs. If the front driveshafts are not turning but the propshaft is then the problem is with the ADD system at the front diff. Check the vacum pipes on the diff and the electrical control box and relay under the dash.

It has been a very long time since I had one of these vehicles but hopefully this will point you in the right direction.

Does anyone know if I need to extend any brakelines or wires in general when I fit a 2" body lift kit to a 92 hilux surf 2.4 auto td?
