OK dont laugh.
I have bought a very shiny new V8 diesel range rover and want to take it mud plugging somewhere not to far from North West London with little kids on board. I dont want to explore, or at least not exceed, the capablities of the car which I know are great, but I do want to wade, crawl and mud plug a bit and get it thoroughly filthy, while we sit in splendid comfort!
I am a mad keen driver of many years, looking to discover the fun to be had with a rangey. All advice greatfully recieved.
Thanks!

I went to Yarwell (I think?)
I had just put some proper rubber on though.
Went very well, kids loved it.

Land Rover experience days are good for what you want. If the local dealer thinks you are a genuine buyer Land Rover offer them for free!!

Thank you.

The lads in the overalls and bobtail hybrids laughed.

Until I followed them round the course, with the kids in the back.

With a shiny new range rover in north west London I am used to people looking daggers at me. Water off a ducks back! What a motor it is. I have always gone for fast German cars before. The RR is a bit patchy build wise but so regal to ride in. I hope it stays reliable - the worst so far is a broken DVD player from delivery which they have failed to fix.

I recently was teaching a guy in a FF RR tdv8 on the standard continental tyres and he was surprised as we went almost the same places as the old mud shod Disco we started in. Main issue was one of concern of damaging the tyres on some of the shale and sharp stones in the ground. I was at a LR Experience place end last year. On both times someone's day was curtailed by damaged tyres.

I have driven most of the major 4x4's off road at our site. (As we are down on the Cornwall and Devon border I feel I'm not plugging the business as it is a bit of a drive for you!) And I know that you can put the RR in some very interesting places :-)
Have fun but beware of damaging the sidewalls of the tyres.

No, we are http://www.traxandtrails.co.uk rather than the LR Experience near Honiton - but I have driven round there in Disco, RR, RR Sport and Freelander 2.

Glad to hear your motor got out and about properly :-)

Thought it looked like Tixover (and sadly remember you saying you'd been there!!) Not far from Yarwell though. Yarwell is in some ways better than Tixover and far bigger. There are some bits you wouldn't take a shiny motor in for fear of tree damage. There were lots of very nice D2s there on Sunday and they were getting into all sorts of places smile

Had the same thing when I took my RRS TDV8 to a Landrover Holland Club meeting and went round the trails with the 90s and Disco2s. There were lots of video cameras came out when I started on some of the more difficult sections and great looks of consternation when I didn't get stuck. I walked the competition trail but never drove it, the gaps between the trees were tight for the 90s and lightweights so I didn't risk the RRS. It took me 4 attempts to get stuck in the mud wallow but after getting pulled back a few meters I drove through it again without getting stuck.
I'm really impressed with the capabilities of the newer offerings from Landrover and a day out with the guys at the Dunkeld Landrover Experience convinced me that I was making a good choice in buying the TDV8 RRS rather than the Freelander 2 we were originally looking at.

yeah the new stuff is mighty impressive off road

just don't take a disco 3 or 4 into soft sand- they really really aren't very good (5 weeks in the sahara proved this, again and again and again and again- and it didn't matter who the driver was either!)

This has got me curious,

What did you find with the Disco3/4 in the sand, is it too heavy, is there some tyre issues, or does the terrain response not like it's sand mode?
