Had a play once, great fun. would love one as i live on the banks of a tidal creek here in cornwall and being amphibious would be great for getting to/from the pub at the other end of the creek.

It depends what you want to do with them.

The early models up until the late 1980's were a bit underpowered and quite noisy, the later models have the Briggs or Kohler twins with power up to 34bhp.

The main problems with the older models is that the drive sprockets wear and the chains jump. Also the axle seals go and they start to leak. To repair either of these problems is time consuming and expensive. Not as expensive however as repairing or replacing the hydrostatic drive which on some early models is a known weakness.

The bigger engined 8x8 Argos have a payload of around 500kg and can tow around 800kg but not uphill. They can carry six people but remeber to ask two of them to get out if you go on the water otherwise you will sink! It is really slow on the water especialy when carrying a load and if there is any current you won't be going anywhere. If you need an Argo to go any distance on water they are designed to be fitted with a small outboard motor which will give you proper amphibious capability.

They are extremely uncomfortable to travel in on rougher surfaces as the only suspension is the tyres and they literaly shake your filling out. They are ideal for moving over boggy moorland or snow where a 4x4 vehicle would get stuck but for use on firmer ground I would opt for a quad or four wheel atv which is alot faster and more comfortable.

I now use an old military Octad instead of an Argo. It has a 60hp diesel with a 30mph top speed. A 1000kg payload and is fitted with a 5ton hydraulic winch for self recovery. It is also amphibious providing you can get to the otherside before it sinks!!
