I'm looking at buying a 90's XJ Jeep Cherokee and wanted to know if anyone on here has had one & what the real MPG is like on them?

I've owned Jeeps in the past but always with the 4.0 in them, I REALLY need a Jeep in my life again... but wont be able to live with the fuel guzzling of the 4.0's and see the diesel as a possible option...

2.5VM diesel XJs are a moneypit, and if you drive a 4litre as slow as a diesel goes fast (IYSWIM) they are very similar on fuel. I would never buy a Jeep with the pre CRD VM diesel. Multipoint LPG 4litre is what you need to look at

Thanks.....damn.... Was really seeing these as an option, LPG isn't an option for me, I have looked into it before but stations around my way that sell LPG are very very rare

Don't suppose you know if the 300tdi Discovery's are a better motor than the Jeep diesels?

I had a diesel XJ for a while and wouldn't have another. As above, very hard to get anywhere near 30mpg and they are very agricultural. Oh, and they eat head gaskets.

I'm just about to start the hunt for a 4.0 as this year's winter runabout.

Thanks, several other people have given me similar advice so I'm going to give the diesel XJ a wide berth

The discovery is a better diesel engine. Its not fast (but you wouldnt expect that), but they just keep going and going. Its the rest of the car that goes wrong!

Mine had 180k on the clock, with boost and fuel wound up and it was still going very strong.
