I've done it many times but the last time was a couple of years ago.
Its a great route but my advice would be not to go as a single vehicle, stick to the correct route dont deviate from it at all, and dont do it when theres been heavy rain in the area unless you're very experienced and well equipped.

Am doing with a group of about 15 other 4x4s, most if not all are reasonably competent, I am really just looking for pointers as to what to look out for en route. I'm fitted up with winch/snorkel/recovery points etc and haven't got stuck anywhere yet...

1is way to many. Groups of 3 is about perfect i did it this weekend and we had problems when meeting traffic coming the other way. Dont stray off the track into "the mud" its very soft churns up very badly and going off track will only help the arguement to close it

For a moment there I thought you said you were going with fifteen other vehicles....

15 is way too many vehicles! at least split them up into 2 or 3 groups.

We last drove it in June (2 vehicles) and found a Discovery 1 abandoned in the river about 100m from the nearest correct crossing point.

Its an easy track if the weather is ok.

Heavy rain and you are in trouble.

Dont go off-piste atall. Strata is one of the few legal routes left and there is a lot of evidence of mindless damage on the banks and so on.

I cannot reiterate this enough.
Taking 16 vehicles over a delicate and easily damaged route is playing right in to the hands of those who'd like it closed.
Consider this.....what's achieved by taking so many cars over the same route on the same day? Very little beyond a boring drive (as you're bound to get jams and hold-ups), advanced erosion of the route surface and condemnation of MY hobby by onlookers and bystanders.
Four vehicles, six at a push, is perfectly adequate in terms of capability, mutual support, socialising and impact.

There are 15 of us going, and as is normal we will split into groups of 3 or 4 and space ourselves out.

We never go 'off-piste' wherever we go.

Just back from Romania, we took a groupe of ten Hummers across the Carpathian mountains.

That is what you call great greenlaning, we all had a fantastic time, what amazing sights.

Look into it, takes a while to get there though.

Andy.

I think groups in the UK should be capped at four vehicles myself.

Its regularly monitored by Police and volunteer groups for 'off piste' activity. Those caught 'off piste' in recent times have been prosecuted successfully.
Its a wonderful route so please make sure that all of your party sticks to the correct route which isnt always easy to see.
Also remember that about 2 years ago a young woman died there as the 4x4 she was passenger in toppled over in the fast flowing water, please be safety conscious.
