Freelander 2004 / 2005 Series II reliability

Hi, my current 4x4 is a Jeep Cherokee 1996 (XJ) which I am considering replacing with the afore-mentioned Freelander. I know the series I was a dog (brother-in-laws brother had one which required a new gearbox & engine) & he bought it new! If I remember correctly Landrover sorted out most of the big issues with the introduction of the series II. Can someone confirm this for me or give me a good reason why I should not buy a Freelander & keep the XJ.
