Looking to get a cheap runaround for dogs/kids/bikes etc that can take a bit of stick and have always liked the look of the Jeep Cherokee (old late model - 1997).
I see you can them now for under 2k but with that big 4L engine it wont be the cheapest thing to run.
The big engine is partly why i want one but i've seen a couple with an LPG conversion. Any pointers on what the benefits are from this and will there be a big saving on fuel? Is performance affected at all?
Will be mainly used in town and B roads and minimal dual carrageway use. 8-10k miles per year.

Do they soley run off LPG?

Had an LPG XJ and it did around 19mpg, no noticable loss of performance on an MPI conversion. Currently drive a grand cherokee (WJ) and had the conversion done at 100k miles, up to 220k miles now and its saved me around £17,000!

Down side of the XJ cherokee is where to put the gas tank, the boot is fairly small, my tank was on 1 side facing front/rear rather than left/right. I am just about to get another XJ LPG'd for the very same reasons as you, need a dog/kid transport vehicle that I don't mind getting scruffy.

Quite tempted by how cheap these are as well.

What goes wrong on these? Heard stories of electrical gremlins, but assume they are reasonably tough mechanically.

not a lot really, UJs in the drive shafts wear, as do bearings but no more than any other 4x4. Just make sure you get a 4litre and drive it in 4x4 not 2wd, easier on the bushes/bearing and makes no difference on mpg. Only electrickery stuff that has gone on mine have been crank sensors (£60ish) and window winders (£40s/h £85 new)
