Hi all

I have an off-roading D90 which gets used for weekend off roading trips. Recently, I went to Tixover Quarry with my local off road club. During a recovery of a Disco, sadly it was stuck fast and my winch slipped, the only way I can describe the noise is it sounded like the winch motor was turning at hyper speed for half a second, after this the winch moved in and out no problem, but as soon as you put any strain on the rope, the winch stopped. You can also "free pull" the rope, even with the clutch engaged. After returning (and drying out), the winch would then only roll out and not in again, I presume this is water in a solenoid (the box was mounted on top of the winch bumber.

The winch is branded ewx 12000 (I think), which google shows up as a champion unit? There is no evidence of manufacturer on the winch.

So, questions.
Is this a specialist job to repair, or can a monkey like me learn how to do it?
Where can I get spares for it, and what's sensible to replace whilst I have the winch off?
Will the solenoids clean up, or will they have to be replaced?
How much of a challenge is it to entend the cable to mount the solenoid box in the engine bay - it's very exposed to water where it is.

Cheers in advance for any help. I'm located in Leicestershire, if it matters, or if any locals want to come and help!!

biggrin

You may find http://forum.difflock.com/ of some help here. Someone on there will be able to help you i'm sure. I've no doubt that there is the knowledge on here but the off road section isn't as active as the rest of the site.

Sounds like a few problems, prob burnt out the brake spool in the drum or stripped a cog there, and yeah maybe one of the sloeniods has burnt out. GEt albright uprated solenoids, but those winches are cheap chinese jobs and a new motor will prob cost more than the winch. Get a decent make that you can get spares for. Have a go at stripping it though, they are not complicated things.
