I cannot read music, I cannot play anything, I own a guitar which my son has taken over as I never did anything with it.

I think I need something where I can see/hear results quickly or I lose interest, which I did with the guitar.

I thought of a recorder as I remember that was the first thing everyone played at school (well everyone except me obviously) but they are a bit st are they not ?

So suggestions please.

If you want results, then take proper lessons in something. You should see a difference soon. I'm lucky in that I live with my guitar and piano teacher. However when she first started teaching me guitar, it was not long before I felt a lot more confident in what I was doing. Without her input I would've struggled and been doing it wrong anyway.

Thanks guys, I was hoping for a different slant but a guitar and proper lessons is probably the way to go.

However I was hoping for a different suggestion as I work overseas and hoped for something I could take with me fairly easily, of course I am sure I would be able to have one at home and another at work.

Cheers.

Harmonica is quite easy to teach yourself.

There isn't really a best. Though Hohner and Lee Oskar are very decent.

Are you into technology/gadgets? If so there's any assortment of portable sequencer type gadgets available either new or for less than a hundred quid on ebay. Some are general purpose (tone generator sequencer types), others are more dance-oriented. Most would allow you to cobble together quick and easy tunes for a bit of fun. Sizes range from VHS video size up to about mouse-mat size, so fairly portable if you're on your travels.

Get a Yamaha portable keyboard for under £100. It should come with the YES (Yamaha Educational System) function which teaches you to play.

Whatever instrument you learn, it will take time and effort. There is no short cut.

The question is, do you have the motivation? And if so, what is that motivation? I learned guitar at 13 because I HAD too. I was obsessed. It was and will always be a labour of love.

Music is unlike anything else, if it you dont 'need' to play, you probably never will.

Sorry if this sounds like a lecture, but so many people say they want to play but in fact dont. Or not enough anyway!

Hmmm, I would like to play an instrument, but want results straight away, or at least fairly quickly, and I think that is my problem, I don't want it enough to persevere.

Anyway a Hohner Marine Band harmonica is ordered along with a couple of learner books, so I will see how it goes.

Thanks for the advice.

You won't regret buying that, just try to spend at least half an hour a day playing with your organ hehe

No it doesn't. I teaches you to mimic.

Yeah, ok, strictly speaking, it's not learning to play but it will seem to be playing and get results quickly which is what he wants. He doesn't want to spend 10 hours reading a book on music theory. He wants to be able to bang out a Beatles classic 10 minutes after taking it out of the box.

I think most people want results straight away and that is understandable. Good luck and enjoy the journey!

I assume you've got a Diatonic Harmonica. (probably in C). That's great because so long as the tune is in the key of C you can't easily get out of tune, and can just pretend that you're improvising...
