No idea if this is the right place or not, but seems as good as any.

A few years ago, a friend of mine did me a good deal on a guitar on the condition I learned to play it. I started but personal circumstances changed which meant I lapsed a bit (I was commuting from Scotland to London so at the weekend there was too much to do). So, having dug it out the frets are all looking a bit manky, what do I need to do to clean if up? I really want it all mint to start learning again, really want to nail it this time!

Any advice?

Two options...

Take it to a guitar shop and have them re string and spruce it up with a set up - this is often farmed out and so potentially check a few prices out and also look at cards on pin board in at least one music shop.

Or get ya self some new strings and a bottle of jim dunlop lemon oil stuff formula 65 or something like that. Fill the gaps in ya knowledge with either a book (the best would probably be the ultimate guitar handbook) or youtube (but be careful what you pay attention to) and do it yourself!

What music you into?

Cheers for that. If a shop did it, what sort of cost are we talking about? I'd like it done right this time and then I'll be happy to maintain it so will pop onto town later if I get a chance.

Music wise, we listen to all sorts really. Older stuff like the who, beatles, stones up to more recent stuff like weller, elbow, doves, radiohead and that sort of stuff. However, also listen to more and more like bombay bicycle club, villagers, cherry ghost and isobel campbell.

Not really sure what to start playing yet. Any suggestions for easy things to learn? I'm torn between learning to play music I like and learning the cords but i suspect to do the first I'll need to know the latter?

My local guitar shop did a refurb, setup amd re- string on my old Ibanez for around £100 IIRC. Might even have been £60 (3 years ago and memory bad smile)

Well worth it

To be honest I don't know 100%, cos I always do it myself, but post above seems close- I was goin to simply say £35 upwards. It depends on who does it and what spec your geetar is - if it has a locking tremolo or not etc and cost of strings!

Yeah you'll need chords to play rhythms - if you look at the chords involved before learning the song you can choose the right songs to start with. At first just stick to chords that don't have long and complicated names - the simpler the name the more standard the chord and therefore the best place to start.

Lead / melody work just requires fret numbers initially and so can be nice and easy if its a simple but effective part, definitely worth a go.

Enjoy!
