BBC Radio 6 Music!

Why did nobody tell me about this station years ago???!
It is fantastic to hear some decent music again
Please tell me at the very least that this has been put on hold - http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010/mar/02/bbc-6-...

Thisis the thread all about it.
I got so fed up with them telling me 'I am listing to 6music' after every record I gave up and stopped listening. I complained and the producer told me it was so the 'occasional listener, and those who heard it in a work place or shop knew what radio station they were hearing and promoting the station. fking muppet.

It's not quite the same thing is it? What you are alluding to is somebody buts in every 10 minutes on the R4 programme to tell you which station you are tuned to, it does not happen, I wonder why?
Listening to the Bob Harris, Johnny Walker and some of the proper DJ's they very rarely tell you what station you are listening to as they realise their listeners already know.
Not only do the daytime presenters name check the station after every record they play jingles that say '6music,6music,6music' which are about as un-imaginative as you can get.
Also 6music has a play list which means you hear the same records 5 times a day 5 days a week and after a while it gets a bit tedious and by the time they get released I'm sick of hearing them.

Have to say that I listen very regularly and one of the reasons I do is because they don't repeat that many songs. Each of the DJs have such a variety of tastes and styles, I don't think it would be possible to run a short list play list (such as Radio 1 do) as there is so little homogenity from one programme to the next.I don't listen all day everyday and if I did, then maybe I might notice it a bit more - but I doubt it.
As an aside, the reason for the station name check is not exclusive to BBC 6 but all stations - radio and TV. Channel availability is vast and for the commercial channels, they need to demonstrate to advertisers how many people are listening / viewing and for the Beeb, they need numbers to justify their funding. Broadcasters get most of this info through research and as it is possible flick through channels and listen or watch without actually knowing what the channel is people need reminding. This is also why all (or most) TV channels also use DOGs (Digital Onscreen Graphic - logo of the channel on the top left of the screen).
I know other stations do the station id a lot and the only time I found it useful was in the 60's finding/listening to Radio Caroline under the bedclothes at night time. Most other radio stations are a lot more subtle about it where 6music sometimes tell you and play a 6music jingle up to 5 times between records and they have done that!
With DAB the radio station and song titles are scrolling across the info screen too.
I know what DOG's are and they are even worse because you don't search for a channel using the DOG but by what is written on the EPG in the big box across the screen as you are changing channels!
