Hello all, I know this is probably a very annoying question to some bur I am basically looking for any tips or unearthing of gems from ph'ers. I have read numerous reviews and buying guides online but wanted some friendly advice. I am looking to learn to play the guitar having played a few basic chords as a child and not a lot since. I'm looking for an acoustic up to around £150. I am looking into 2nd hand options and searches into new models so far have suggested the likes of the yamaha f310 and vintage v300. Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated. Tia

I highly recommend the Yamaha stuff. They put out very good instruments for the price. They've never made a bad instrument really, they have kept an incredible image intact for years. They've never had any QC problems that have plagued the higher end manufacturers. They're not the be all and end all, by no means. They're just excellent value for money, of course there are lots of better stuff out there, but it will need to be double the money before it touches the Yamaha.

I've owned 9 Yamaha basses, all of which have been typical mid-range stuff, but they all punched well above their weight. I stupidly go through phases of buying one, and then replacing it with something else and so and so forth. I will likely have another quite soon. I'll part with the Vintage Fenders when I stop lying to myself, and get something like another Yammy.

I would look Secondhand - primarily forums, and maybe even the likes of eBay and Gumtree. You could maybe find an LL6 for £150-£200 if the chap needs shot of it. Failing that look at the FG730. Getting one of these would make you set for getting better too. I think you'd be less likely to want to trade up with the Yamaha, where as the V300 you'd maybe think you're outgrowing. However, make no mistake the V300 is a great guitar too, and dirty cheap!

I have a friend who has recently begun playing the guitar and it's a V300 he has bought. It appears a decent guitar for such little cash, it has been setup nice and low from the factory and has a great sound due to having a solid spruce top, pretty rare for a budget guitar!
I can't comment on the other guitars mentioned, I play a Guild myself but I wouldn't hesitate buying a v300 for a beginner.

I have a Yamaha FG-403ms which is my main guitar for random playing and taking on hols etc and I love it:

Nice clean/warm sound, good action etc and just a decent quality affordable guitar.

However if I were you I'd go get the free one from the kind chap above biggrin
