DJ Shadow said it best for me back in 1996 as to what's wrong with hip hop. However, every now and again something springs up to fire up my interest in hip hop again. This time it's Shad - Rose Garden

So PH, enlighten me, what else is new (last few years) and just a good and funky?

To me, Jay-Z has gone from your average rapper to an artist of high caliber. I always hear him in my in ear headphones. I think it's mainly because he doesn't give a damn. He's an "old man" and he's going to do what he wants. I'm also a fan of Lil' Wayne. Hate me if you want.

Not really new, but never seems to get much credit?

Can't really think of a bad song of his.

If you like that check out the John Robinson album with Lewis Parker.

As for me I've not heard much in the way of albums just singles here and there. I did like the Vado and Camron mixtape Polo Sport but I'm guessing most on here will ignore the wordplay and denounce it.

IMO yet to hear anything to better wu tang clan-enter the 36 chambers. chef raekwon-cuban linx is nearly just as good. gza-liquid swords and mobb deep- infamous both are very good albums aswell but wu tang in there early days were untouchable

have just ordered gang starr-moment of truth. havnt heard much of there stuff but heard a few samples of this album and there previous album and they seem to make decent hip hop with smooth lyrics and old skool beats which is good in my books smile

With the state of hip hop at the moment i've really had to start searching for mew(ish) music.

Been really getting Royce Da 59 recently, didnt realise how gifted he was.

Here's a few of favourites

Royce Da 5'9" - Shake This - DJ Premier beat

Royce Da 5'9'' - Gun Harmonizing - This is lyrical gun.. love it.

Royce da 5'9" - On The Run + Murder - Two seperate songs put together, Royce displaying his story telling ability. well worth a listen.

On the search for new hip hop i've also stumbled across gangstar, downloaded all their albums the other day (can PM you the link if you want). Cant believe i never got into them before. Really enjoying working my way through all the about. Dj premier solo stuff is definitely worth checking out, he's the producer / one half of gangster if you didnt know, i only just found out recently.

Struggling for time to look up all these names and tracks at the moment, but Gang Starr is something I do know! GURU is one of the finest MCs of all time and Moment of Truth is in my top 5 hip-hop albums of all time. It's such a shame that he died recently.

You will be hunting for the samples they use for ages and ages to come...

Also a Lil Wayne fanboy over here too, went to see him last year.. Amazing, best thing I've been to.

Hes good to listen to, very clever lyrics on most of his songs and does it so effortlessly.

Drake is good, kind of Lil Waynes junior.. Easier to listen to as hes not as raw and has a few more singing bits in it, which he also can do.

Going to see him in January biggrin

Totally agree, Guru was one of a kind. Such a shame he passed.

Another agree.

My favourite was always Hard to Earn. That album was hard. Premo really came into his zone making that album.
