AER Compact Classic Pro Amp hum.

I bought my wife an AER Compact Classic Professional amp for her birthday and I have noticed a fair bit of 'hum' which gets louder with the volume. It's not really an issue when she's playing, but it's audible when no notes are played. Is this normal, or is there an issue with the amp? The amp makes the noise wether an instrument and/or lead is connected or not.
In fact, when the volume level is at 0, it sounds like there is some hum from the internal power converter. Could it be this noise that is being amplified when the volume is increased?
