My girlfriend has been put in charge of organising the music round of her local pub quiz. She was just going to go with an intros round, but I though that was a bit boring so I suggested a samples round.
Find old well known song. Find song that has sampled it. Play new song to contestants. Get them to supply the name of the original artist and song title. Pretty simple you would think, especially with the help of http://www.whosampled.com/
However, there are so many obscure samples of drumbeats and barely audible sampled background noises on obscure records, it's proving hard to find recognisable samples from recognisable sources.
So I ask your help for suggestions. Anyone have any ideas? Audience will mostly be middle aged if that helps.
Over to you!
Cheers.

Yes, why not ask about songs based on classical music.
Ask if they know the classical composer or tune it was based on, or play a bit of the classical and see if they know what pop song it was.
All the info (re British Hit songs based on the classics)
here

You'd be amazed at some of these!
There are also samples you could use.

Wild thing - Tone Loc

Features Eddie Van Halen's riff from Jamie's crying.

"Ice Ice Baby" may be a bit too obvious.
