Recommendations please for overhead mics suitable for both live and studio purposes, and which could be used on their own, and also with a fully mic'd kit. I have a set of Sens for the kit which I have always been happy with.

Also, any pointers on mixers (8 inputs min) to feed into the PA from the drums.

What have you used?

Might be the ones that you already have but C-414(pretty sure that's right) are great IMHO for overheads for studio and live.

What's your budget?

I've used Rode mics right up to things like Shoeps.

Think we used to use AKG C1000's we I was recording drums. Don't know what status or rating they get, but they did the job pretty well.

I think it's pretty well defined that condensor microphones are needed as overheads. One thing i learned at college was that if you walk around a studio or stage, and find out where the drumkit sounds good from, or any intsrument really, by sticking a condensor there, you'd get a good sound from it.

All depends on how much money you want to spend and what sound you want to get.

Budget? Not C414 money.

I reckon £300 for a pair.

Pair of AKG C3000 's would come in a shade about £350 if you shop around on price a bit.... or Rode NT5's come as a matched pair for about £250

Or just bung a pair of SM57s up there and have done with it. Horses for courses really, as if the PA isn't up to scratch, you'll get very little benefit from expensive microphones.

Neuman's are awesome, also Beyerdynamics if you've got the cash!
