Looks like he just needed to take a break and the others wouldn't agree to it. Left him nowhere else to go other than to quit the band he helped found 25 years ago.

Usually I would say the drummer doest matter and in 90% of rock/metal bands that probably true but Portnoy was certainly a big part of DT. As he says he was a major part from the start

It is very odd that they would carry on without him and not disband some something is amiss I bet!

Not only was he the guy that started it, it sounds like he also did most of the running and co-ordination of the whole thing. I would say he's pretty irreplaceable, especially where the drums are such a foundation of DT's music. Finding someone to replace him will be nigh-on impossible I would say.

I wouldn't be so sure, graveyards are littered with indespensible people...

Perhaps they may go down a different road musically, who knows?!
