The Orb ft. David Gilmour - Metallic Spheres 11/10/10
Discussion
As per the title really.
Been in to the Orb since Little Fluffy Clouds / Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld, and a Floyd fan for longer. This collaboration, for me, has immense promise.
Theres a video on Amazon, where Youth and Dr Alex are interviewed...the latter is asked if it could be played live, and if so, where would the gig be? Without hesitation, Alex replies "Battersea Power Station."

I've heard disappointing things about it from a friend of mine - this is what he had to say:
"3 full listens - It's a bit too drifty - and doesn't seem to come together to form anything solid. If there was going to be that special element that draws u back for more then it would have shown itself by now. It gets a little folky and interesting at one point but then seems to disapate to nothing again. Missing the magic for me. If u compare it to say, Automnic, FSOL or Tom Middleton's Lifetracks it just seems weak. I could well imagine they all recorded little bits seperately, in different studios etc coz it just doesn't seem to go anywhere or gel. Mind that's just my opinion. Bet u wished u never asked!!

Still not managed to listen to the whole album yet but initial reaction is mixed - Gilmour's guitar is instantly floydian, with "Echoes" (see what I did there ) of Cluster One from The Division Bell. But it falls apart for me with the way the album flows. The joins, to my ears are annoyingly dischordant and the whole thing is on the wrong side of over chilled. As mentioned above, in comparison to FSOL and the like it seems a little weak in places, as if they just threw a load of material together to fill out the the remaining time.
I really want to like it and hope it improves with listening but at the moment it's a 6/10.
