My other scource of internet help has failed me miserably so I shall put the question to the oracles of PH.

Im hoping for the impossible here, but Ill give a prize* if anyone miraculously identifies a piece of music from a terrible description.
Here is all that I can say about it:
1)It is a piano piece (or mainly piano)
2)it is extremely quick and contains bits of sweeping hands down the keyboard thus playing all the notes (if you get my drift)
3)Its relatively famous but Im not sure its neccesarily one of the classical composers
4)For some reason (maybe completely incorrectly) I associate it with westerns, perhaps accompanying chases or getaways.
5) My Mother in Law thought it was Triahs Trash Polka- and I can see why, but she was wrong.
6) Oh just thinking about it I would liken it more to ragtime than classical (although I don't think it actually is)

  • no prize of course

First thought was Moonlight Sonata; not the famous movement, but this one:

Nope. Good effort though.
The answer has now been found by a complete miracle from a clever bloke but Ill string this out and see if any Pher can get it with the limited information provided

scratchchin

Tenuous one this, but does contain elements of your OP (quite famous / chase / a Western-Film feel / Polka timing):

Normally, you ought to attend concerts in a suit of some sort. I think you'd look better at his concerts if you just rocked up looking like Marilyn Manson.

That is a fairly vague description.

These are probably nowhere near, but they are worth listening to anyway

Rachmaninov Prelude No 5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-Qb7AS1yxg
Liszt Grand Galop Chromatique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYUx1-PpHAo
Chopin Etude No 12: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gi5VTBdKbFM

None of those.
Agree its a terrible description, which is why I was amazed when someone got it first time.

Sounds like a piece called Music Box Dancer or something like that - I recall from childhood

Hmmm only other bit I know with sweeping down keyboard is Griegs concerto in A. And I've probably spelled that wrong. I blame the 'solving brotehr problem' thread for diluting my brain to Trisha levels. Sorry.

Now I have seen it being played, there is no sweeping of the hands, just some fast note playery.
Ill give it today and tell the answer if noone has it.

Ahhh I have just thought of a piece from my daughters Baby Mozart DVD. I have no idea what the piece is called though. Probably Mozart Piano Concerto in A SOMETHING OR OTHER

Well I must say I am still struggling to get to Sabre Dance from the description you first posted! Have you seen Dave Edmunds' version? You'll find it on youtube.
