I come from a musical family in that my dad was a drummer my mum a singer and my brother a guitarist. After a great many years having always gravitated towards bass and drums I bought myself a bass guitar last summer.Nothing serious but just to pickup once in a while but I got a hankering to jam with other people so put an ad on musofinder.
Surprisingly I got two responses asking if I would like to join a band. Now I can string the odd bassline together a little shakily but im a 44yr old beginner and I made that obvious in my ad but although scared I am so tempted.

What sorts of bands are they? Gigging, or just getting together and jamming? If you make it totally clear that you're a beginner and leave it up to them, why not? You've got to start somewhere!

They speak of eventually gigging but one of the bands stated they are not concerned about experience as long as I was prepared to put in the practice.I dont think its fair otherwise as I dont have the experience yet.

And if you don't have a shot at it now you never will, everyone has to start somewhere.

It's good if you have support from home but make sure you remember them because even the most humble pub / club band member gets presented with " opportunities " from time to time. ( I'm a retired expert in this particular field )

Don't be scared, go and have some fun.
Even if you just play the root notes on the chord changes your adding to the band,
also a band looking for a bass player are pretty much buggered without one.

Thanks yeah I was thinking something similar.I notice there seem to be a lot of bands looking for bass or drums which is really encouraging.

You'll never be short of a band when you play bass!

The best way to learn bass is in a band, you have a musical background anyway so even just playing roots and getting the changes right will help you and help them hold the band together. Bass playing is all about feel, imho too many kids play it like a guitar when that's not needed.

Enjoy yourself.

Note to self - get in another band! I miss it...

Cheers Alex
Funnily enough I was chatting to a sales guy in a music shop who pretty much said the same thing.
