From the late 60's & early 70's? Rooting through my step-father's LP collection when I was 15 opened my eyes to most of it. Stuff like:

The Groundhogs - Bog Roll Blues:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Myt6xtMYeLA

Taste - Blister On The Moon (go to 2:00 in for this):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-IyyZGlCqk

Camel - Arubaluba:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PndC7HiVcGw

Chicken Shack - Mean Old World:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NKJBiTTB3A&fea...

Blue Cheer - Summertime Blues:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU5uDozoSSM

Can't find any decent clips of Big Brother & The Holding Company apart from Ball & Chain at Monterey.

I suppose the above are more obscure, but despite the simplicity I appreciate the tunes more because of it. Amps, PA, plug in and go.

And that's something that is being lost in this digital age. You can't exactly flick through an Ipod can you. Alright you can look at it to see whats on there but it's not the same thing as having that tactile connection with a whole collection of records or cds, pulling them out and looking through the cover etc.

I know a guy that sells cds and records on ebay, he buys them in bulk and increasingly they are from people selling their collections because its on their ipod and they feel they don't need them anymore. I think it's sad that less and less kids will have the experience you obviousley had at 15, and one that can make a huge impression.

Rory Gallagher's Irish Tour '74 must be a candidate for the finest live album of all time, in respect of capturing the raw atmosphere of the performance.

The solo on "A million miles away" is incredible...

It's a good point, that.

Back in the day when I was "discovering" these groups, part of the experience was listening to the music whilst enjoying the artwork on the sleeve and reading the liner notes. There was one album by an outfit called "Cochise". The cover was fascinating - a large side on view of a nekkid wet breast complete with a rugby stud-esque nipple. The music was ste. But I did like the album cover hehe

Anyway. Here's Bachman Turner Overdrive (no, not the one you're thinking):

And in a similarly loud and obnoxious vein, Mountain:

<anorak>believe it or not, The World At One (political programme shown on Sundays during the 1970's) had a Mountain tune as it's intro music</anorak>

Drat

But it was the 70's when the programme was on, and I didn't "get" classic rock until much later.....about Ten Years After:

My Dad is a massive fan of Rory Gallagher, but he's the one artist in my Dad's collection that I've never been able to get into. I don't mind the music, I just don't find it engaging. I couldn't tell you the name of any one of his songs, for instance.
What should I listen to to change my opinion?

I'm here.

Funnily enough i had disc 2 of the BBC Sessions on in the car this morning.

Nothing sets you up for the day better than 'Hands Off' turned up to 11.

If 'Pistol Slapper Blues' doesn't convert you, nothing will, IMO.

Watching one of the girls on X-Facktoh last night (I know, I know boxedingetmecoat etc etc) butchering a Led Zep standard, reminded me of an old VHS tape I have of Plant & the lads playing to a small audience in Denmark before they were famous.

I watched it this afternoon after the GP whilst mrs k was out.

Bloody marvellous. Example here:

Must confess I'm not a Rory fan.Never seemed more than mediocre or one dimensional,y'know when you just don't identify on ANY level with an artiste? Lol

No offence meant.Anyway thread says Classic Rock...Charlie Huhn on vocals and Ted on guitar.
