DJ Tim Westwood talks to Matt Stadlen about how he got into hip-hop, its relationship with knife and gun crime, growing up as the son of a vicar and how he wants to keep on DJing until his dying day.
God damn it, just when you need an article to finish with "which will be within the next week or so"...

I don't mind him DJing 'til he pops.

Just as long as he doesn't make another bloody car show.

Oh I don't know. I think compared to most Radio 1 DJ's - Wiley, Moyles, Bowman - he's pretty good. I'd much prefer it that Moyles stops, not actually die per se, but just shut up. Saying that I listen to Evans now anyways.

(I'm getting boring, look at that meaningless drivel above. nono)

Anyhoo.

I'm quite convinced his tounge in firmly in his cheek a lot of the time. Quite funny actually. smile

But isn't he, like, in his 50's now or something?

Surely a "normal" person gets to a certain age and thinks "You know what, I reckon I'm getting too old to be pretending I'm not old"?

He's alright. He doesn't take himself too seriously as far as I can tell. He's well respected in hip hop circles so he must be doing something right.

He comes across as a bit of a tt until you get to understand him a bit then hes alright. As others have said, he doesnt take himself too seriously and is very knowledgeable about music in general. Certainly better than some of the other R1 DJs.

He's quite funny in a mad crazy way, I actually liked the but he did for Moyles show recently. Not keen on the music he does but he seems to get all the big rap stars onto his show so he must have respect out there.

Unlike Scott Mills, he doesn't say 'off of' at least 5 times in every sentence - which for me is always a bonus - so keep them spinning Tim!

He may talk like a tt, but he was singly responsible for getting the UK market to take on and understand hip hop/rap back in the day, he heavily promoted the genre, hence the respect he receives from the rap industry.

In many ways he is quite genuine, he enjoys the music and environment of the rap scene - and why not!

He is knowledgeable, and a friend of mine had a track released on one of his compilations a few years back. However, he does take himself seriously, and from what I've been told he's viewed as being a bit of a tt by those in the industry as well. But its his knowledge and connections that keep him going.

And on the plus side, he is a bit of a petrolhead, albeit apparently a fan of old american V8 muscle.

He makes me laugh so for that reason I like him. He is the blackest white guy ever.
